Doosan Bobcat in talks to acquire Wacker Neuson

Compact equipment OEM Doosan Bobcat is aiming to acquire fellow compact OEM Wacker Neuson as part of an effort to expand into a larger European market.

Munich-based Wacker Neuson SE is in advanced discussions about a deal in which Doosan Bobcat would acquire a stake of about 63% from major shareholders, according to a Dec. 2 Wacker Neuson release. In addition, Bobcat plans to launch an all-cash public takeover offer for the remaining shares, a transaction expected to total more than 5 trillion won ($3.4 billion) according to a Dec. 2 Douglas Research Advisory note.

Wacker Neuson’s market cap sat at $2.1 billion on Dec 2, according to the company. The acquisition would be the largest for Doosan since the acquisition of Bobcat for $4.9 billion in 2007, Douglas Kim, Korean and Asian stock expert and chief executive at Douglas Research Advisory, said in the note.

With the acquisition, Bobcat plans to aggressively expand in Europe, Kim said. Bobcat’s North American sales, which totaled $3.3 billion, represent 72.9% of its sales through the first nine months of 2025, according to its Oct. 30 third-quarter earnings release.

“Doosan Bobcat has a strong market share in North America, while it is relatively weak in Europe,” Kim said. “Wacker Neuson, on the other hand, has a significant presence in Germany, Austria and northern Europe, making it a strong fit for Doosan Bobcat’s European expansion strategy.”

Doosan Bobcat’s Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President Cho Duk-je confirmed reports of the discussions in a Dec. 3 Korean regulatory filing.

“While the company is considering the acquisition of Wacker Neuson SE, no specific decisions have been made or confirmed at this time,” he said in the filing. “We will update this disclosure when specific details are finalized or within one month.”

Bobcat’s North America sales fell 5.8% year over year to $3.3 billion for the first nine months of 2025, according to the company’s Q3 earnings release. Meanwhile, Bobcat’s European, Middle East and African sales fell 4.8% YoY to $711 million during that time.

Wacker Neuson’s Americas revenue fell 9.6% YoY to $376.3 million during the first nine months of the year, according to the company’s Nov. 13 earnings report. Wacker Neuson’s Europe, Middle East and Africa revenue declined 4.1% YoY to $1.5 billion during that period.

Bobcat’s compact construction equipment revenue totaled $3.5 billion during the period, representing 77% of its total revenue, according to the earnings report.

Compact construction equipment represents a key market in Europe, with demand estimated at 160,000 units annually, Douglas Research’s Kim said.

“Germany accounts for approximately 22% of this demand and is considered a key base for expanding into the Eastern European market,” he said. “The company is also expected to explore opportunities for increased orders related to post-war reconstruction projects in Ukraine.”
