SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCSC) — A Dorchester teacher is finding new ways to make music class more hands-on by adding a new element into the lessons.
Erin Bromley teaches music at Newington Elementary School and says she loves instilling confidence in music in students.
“You can see the growth from when they come in here, never doing school, until I send them off to middle school, hopefully doing more music in the future,” Bromley said.
To keep that progress going, Bromley wants to turn some of her lessons into games, making music theory feel less like work and more like play. She’s hoping to add interactive tools to her classroom. Things like dice, cards, and other hands-on materials
“The DonorsChoose project is for manipulatives for them to play games while I’m working individually with students. I’m hoping to make some board games with recorders and things like that,” Bromley said.
She says the goal is simple: give students a chance to learn by practicing skills together and having fun while doing it.
“Students are able to work together, cooperate in small group activities, and are able to do some more interactive things with the recorder. We love playing music, but it will take them a step further,” Bromley said.
