‘Doughnut’ economics expert to lead sustainable finance event

An ecological economist behind a best-selling book published in more than 20 languages has been announced as the keynote speaker at the Sustainable Finance Awards next month.

Taking place on 30 April at Cineworld and now in their fourth year, the awards are designed to to celebrate firms and individuals who contribute towards “supporting the mobilisation of capital towards sustainable outcomes and impact”.

Among the awards is a new category called the ‘Simon Boas Success Story’ Award, which aims to recognise a local firm that has delivered a “distinct, exceptional and inspirational contribution to sustainable finance in Jersey”.

As well as recognising contributions, the awards also aim to inspire, according to organisers Jersey Finance.

Keynote speaker Kate Raworth – a Senior Teaching Fellow at Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute who has been influential with audiences ranging from the UN General Assembly and Pope Francis to David Attenborough and Extinction Rebellion – will provide a video presentation at the event.

There will also be a video presentation from David Craig, Co-chair of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures, which seeks to redirect global financial flows towards nature-positive outcomes. He is the founder and former CEO of Refinitiv, which was acquired by London Stock Exchange Group in 2021 for $27 billion.

A panel discussion on Jersey’s support for innovation in sustainable finance will then take place, moderated by Dame Susan Rice, Chair of the Global Ethical Finance Initiative (GEFI) and one of the judges for this year’s Awards.

Chair of the Financial Services Culture Board, Dame Susan was founding chair of the Chartered Banker Professional Standards Board and has helped develop approaches to social finance in the US and UK, and she also chairs Forth Green Freeport, attracting investment for industrial regeneration in Scotland.

Amy Bryant, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Jersey Finance, said they were “delighted” about the slate of guests.

“This year, not only are we celebrating all those who are driving positive change in the sustainable finance space in Jersey but also providing a platform to galvanise people and give attendees inspiration as they advance on their journey in helping to deliver sustainable finance solutions,” she said.
