Drew Barrymore tears up over body insecurities during fashion segment

Drew Barrymore found herself getting emotional while speaking candidly about her own body insecurities during a fashion segment on her talk show.

Monday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show saw its titular host, Ross Mathews, Sunny Anderson, and fashion expert Kristina Zias team up to help two women — Dawn and Meghan — confront their own style insecurities. However, it was Dawn’s fear of wearing tight clothing after losing weight that really struck a chord with Barrymore.

“I so related. I really did,” she tearfully told Dawn after welcoming her onstage. “The other day, I was walking down the street and I’ve had two c-sections and I’m so wrecked down there that I permanently just… I can’t wear a lot of different types of pants.”

Barrymore is mom to daughters Olive, 13, and Frankie, 11, whom she shares with ex Will Kopelman.

“The other day I was walking around and I had this shorter shirt on and I couldn’t keep my jacket closed,” she continued. “And I’m like, walking around and I was like, ‘I don’t want anyone to see this.’”

The 50 First Dates actress added that she fully understood what it was like “when you have kids and you have a busy life and your body changes and you get older and things just aren’t the same” anymore.

“Just hearing your story, I just thought of how I felt two days ago walking down the street on a Sunday with my daughter,” she told Dawn. “I totally get it. And I’ve gotta tell you, I’m looking at you and all I see is just your beautiful hard work — that I only know because you told us, I wouldn’t know otherwise — and you look so stunning.”

After speaking with Dawn’s daughter, Barrymore also highlighted how her own children help push her out of her fashion comfort zone, too.

“Listen, you know what my daughter does? She encourages me to dress differently. And a lot of the times I feel really good,” she said. “I’ll never wear those pair of jeans again… We all can find something that fits us right.”

Barrymore and her costars have spoken openly about their struggles with body image on her talk show, most recently on a January episode where she revealed that people used to tell her that she was “too heavy” at just 10 years old

“I was 10 years old and I just was told by everybody, ‘You don’t look how you did in E.T. You’re too heavy. You’re not blonde enough. You’re not old enough. You’re too young. You’re not tall,’” she recalled at the time. “And everybody just started getting involved in the way I looked.”

Barrymore added, “What I’m so relieved about now is that it’s four decades later, I’m 50… I do know what’s important now, and the look in my eyes is so clear.”

The Drew Barrymore Show airs weekdays on CBS.
