Drew Goddard was going all out for the Sinister Six movie! The director reveals how the cancelled blockbuster would’ve felt like nothing Marvel has done before.
The Sinister Six film is truly a victim of circumstance. While the idea of a villain team-up prior to most of them fighting Spider-Man seems silly, the project was set to be helmed by Drew Goddard, the writer and director behind some of the most imaginative movies over the past decade. Though, as we know now, the project was ultimately cancelled due to complications around the (at the time) current direction of Spider-Man and Sony Pictures.
Drew Goddard has mostly kept details about his cancelled Sinister Six film close to his chest. However, with Project Hail Mary now in theaters, the director revealed some new information about the film in an interview with Coy Jandreau. Specifically, he revealed that the project was going to take big swings that didn’t care about continuity.
“I wanted it to feel like a summer annual. I feel like I’m tired of serialisation in comic book movies. I get the important part, but what I loved was the summer annual where you had the ongoing, but then every summer you would get one story that was bananas.”
“I said when I pitched it, ‘I’m not going to screw up anyone’s continuity, but I want to feel like, ‘Oh my god, what happened?’ That was the feeling that I wanted to get. I still haven’t seen anyone capture that. I’m not giving up. I got to get a summer annual.”
Was Spider-Man In The Cancelled Sinister Six Movie?
Of course, when a project like Sinister Six is brought up, there’s two questions on everyone’s minds: was Spider-man in it, and who would have played him? While Drew Goddard didn’t provide a call sheet for the casting film, the director did tease that the film would take the beloved Webhead in a brand new direction.
“It was a Spider-Man movie. That’s the other thing I’ll tell you. Spider-Man was in the movie, but it was a different approach.”
While it’s possible that a Sinister Six project is eventually made by Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, it’s likely that Drew Goddard wouldn’t be involved, and his film will remain essentially cancelled. It’s always a shame when a director’s vision never comes to life. Though, given how well Sony’s Spider-Man villain universe has gone since this project was cancelled, it may have been a blessing in disguise for Goddard.
