GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – While some geared up for a big Christmas dinner, others opted for a more relaxing pastime.
Many Eastern Carolinians took to the movies to unwind during the busy holiday. Golden Ticket Cinemas in Greenville offered multiple showings of new releases throughout the day.
For some people, like Holly Tate, spending Christmas at the big screen was a first.
“I raised a bunch of kids,” Tate said. “I’ve always been busy on Christmas. But now they’re all grown and gone, so we thought we’d come to the movies.”
For others, like Kim Shovelin, it’s a family tradition that goes back decades. She says it started when she was a teenager as a way for her and her cousins to get out of the house while their grandmother cooked.
“After we eat and open gifts, we come to the movies,” Shovelin said. “It’s amazing to me that the movies are open every year on Christmas, and I think it’s pretty cool that the employees are willing to work on Christmas Day.”
Anne Tess also says she’s carried on the tradition for 30 years. This year, she brought her friends Sue Curll, Kathy Baxter, and Katrina Combs along for a showing of “Song Sung Blue.”
“It was really well done. We all cried,” Combs said.
Other moviegoers say they were excited to see titles such as “Avatar: Fire and Ash” and “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants.”
