To the Editor:
Your article about Epstein’s references to Greece during the harsh years of the memoranda is revealing. I hope that Greece will never again find itself in such a vulnerable situation – that is, at the mercy of the international banking system. I fully agree with Mr. Chomsky’s position that “the debts should have been considered odious and restructured, or cancelled.”
Unfortunately, this did not happen, and ordinary people paid a very high price, with all the negative consequences. Even today many households are threatened by funds/servicers in an inhumane way, with foreclosures and auctions.
The state does not protect them, even when it concerns a primary residence. The law was changed to the detriment of the people, which for me is unjust. A society without reliable institutions and laws turns into a jungle – lawlessness that is dangerous for everyone. Our Greece deserves something better than this.
