The European Commission has launched an infringement procedure against Greece for failing to update its national air pollution control program as required under EU law.
The Commission said it has sent a letter of formal notice to Greece for not submitting an updated plan under the National Emissions Ceilings Directive, which aims to reduce emissions of key atmospheric pollutants across the European Union.
The directive sets national emission reduction targets for several air pollutants that must be met annually between 2020 and 2029, with more ambitious targets taking effect from 2030. It also requires EU member states to adopt national air pollution control programs outlining measures to meet those commitments.
Under the rules, countries must update these programs at least every four years to show progress in implementing measures and staying on track to meet emission reduction goals.
The Commission said Greece has not submitted the required update “despite several reminders.”
Greece now has two months to respond and address the issues raised. If the response is deemed unsatisfactory, the Commission may move to the next stage of the infringement process by issuing a reasoned opinion, a formal request to comply with EU law.
