PITTSBORO, N.C. (WTVD) — It was a special night in Chatham County on Thursday, where UNC head coach Hubert Davis and Tar Heels basketball were in the house to see Pittsboro’s very own Drake Powell make his return.
With the NBA in the All-Star break, Powell, a forward with the Brooklyn Nets, returned to his alma mater, Northwood High School, as it welcomed back Powell and his family to raise his No. 32 Northwood jersey into the rafters.
A packed gym waited to see Powell upon his return.
“It’s great,” Powell said. “I didn’t know there was going to be that many people here, but yeah, I think that just speaks volumes to how much love that there is.”
His proud parents were on hand.
“It’s definitely surreal, I will say that,” said Dedric Powell, Drake’s father. “I mean, it’s just like, you know, he was just here the other day, and now we’re back doing this, you know, he’s getting honored and, it’s just great.”
It was a special moment for mom, too.
“To look up and see his jersey up there, I mean, Northwood’s just been great to all three of my kids,” said Cherice Powell. “This community, it’s a great thing, and we’re very honored.”
