Farmers and livestock breeders from Aetolia-Acarnania have launched a new blockade of the Ionia Odos at the Angelokastro toll station near Agrinio.

Ionia Odos is the highway linking western Greece from the northern city of Ioannina to Patras.

The blockade had been temporarily lifted on Christmas Eve to ease traffic for holiday travelers.

Following the renewed protest, vehicle traffic is being diverted to the old national road. The farmers have announced that the blockade will be lifted again on New Year’s Eve.

On Tuesday, farmers plan to enter the city of Agrinio with tractors and other agricultural vehicles and stage a protest outside the offices of MPs from the ruling New Democracy party.

Meanwhile, farmers and livestock breeders in Achaea continue their blockade of the Eglikada interchange on Patras’s peripheral road, forcing traffic to divert onto the city’s local road network.
