Feel the Beat: Music Showdown Hits Campus

The Music Showdown was the perfect cup of tea for music lovers. On Thursday students gathered in Ostrander Auditorium for Music Showdown, a music trivia event hosted by the Student Event Team. The space was filled with music, laughter and friendly competition as students put up to the test their knowledge of songs, artists and genres.

“The overall structure of the event was a music-themed trivia competition made up of multiple rounds,” said event organizer Aklil Mulugeta. “Each round had a different theme, and participants answered questions through their phones while everything was displayed on a screen.”

Mulegeta said the idea for Music Showdown came from smaller Kahoot-style games they’ve done during their Tuesdays at 4 meetings.

“Those were always really popular and engaging,” Mulugeta said, “so I thought expanding that into a larger, more structured event would be a great idea.”

One of the highlights of Music Showdown was its accessibility.  Participants weren’t selected in advance; anyone was able to join by entering the game when they arrived or through Zoom. This open format helped so that all students, regardless of their schedule or location, had the opportunity to be part of the experience.

“What made this event unique was that it was interactive and accessible,” she said. “Instead of just watching something, everyone was actively participating the entire time.”

Alondra Gonzalez, a music lover who attended the event, said the event was perfect for her.

“I think these events are really important, especially during April, which is kind of the last month of the semester,” she said. “The workload starts to increase, and final exams are getting closer, so that definitely raises students’ stress levels. Events like this can really help students forget, even if just for a moment, about all the assignments they have to do or the fact that finals are coming up. It’s just a chance to have fun.”

“Music is something people can easily bond over and use to make new friends just by having the same taste. I definitely got to meet new people, so that was really fun,” Gonzalez added.

The event was more than a competition; it was an opportunity to connect and unwind. Mulugeta  said she hoped the audience took away a fun and engaging experience where they could connect with others and enjoy the event.

By combining music, interaction, and community, Music Showdown successfully created a space where students could step away from stress and simply enjoy the moment together.
