‘Feels like Mars, not Earth’: Greece’s haunting red sky goes viral– videos inside

On April 1, 2026, people in Crete and Santorini woke up to something they weren’t expecting. The sky looked deep red, almost like a scene from a movie. It felt unusual enough that many people quickly took photos and shared them on X (formerly Twitter).“Are we sure this isn’t the Martians invading ??” one user wrote. Another said, “It’s legitimately crazy that this is not AI generated.” Some people reacted with humour, but also a bit of concern: “If I woke up and the sky was this red, I’m just going back to sleep. The world is clearly ending.”

What caused the red sky

As reported by News18, experts say the reason behind this was dust coming all the way from the Sahara Desert in Libya. A strong storm, named Erminio, lifted huge amounts of dust into the air and carried it across the Mediterranean towards Greece. This dust contains iron particles, which alter the appearance of light in the sky. Blue and green light gets blocked more, while red and orange shades become more visible. When there’s a lot of dust, the sky can look much darker and redder than usual.

How it affected daily life

According to an NDTV report, the storm also brought strong winds, going over 100 km/h in some places. Because of this, a few British Airways flights had to be diverted to Corfu.Officials also warned people to be careful, especially those with breathing issues, as the dust in the air can make it harder to breathe.Social media, meanwhile, was full of reactions. One user joked, “Looks like the sky loaded the apocalypse filter.” Even though there’s a clear explanation, the sight still felt strange to many.

A rare but natural sight

Experts say this kind of red sky doesn’t happen often, but it’s completely natural. When desert dust travels long distances and mixes with the right weather conditions, it can change the colour of the sky like this. For many, it looked almost unreal, but it was simply nature showing a different side of itself.Disclaimer: The Times of India has reported this story based on social media posts and publicly available information.
