The Fire Department’s Operations Center received more than 580 calls from Thursday morning until 1 p.m. Friday as Storm Byron swept across Greece.
Firefighters carried out 270 water-pumping operations, removed 69 fallen trees and assisted in transporting 20 people to safe locations, authorities said.
According to an updated Emergency Bulletin of Hazardous Weather Phenomena issued Friday by the National Meteorological Service, the severe weather will continue through Friday and persist until midday Saturday.
Forecasters warn that rainfall will be not only extremely heavy but also long-lasting, with storms expected to bring hail in some areas and periods of very strong winds.
