Flavor Flav is turning a recent political controversy into a celebration for Team USA’s female Olympians and it now includes a night with one of pop music’s most iconic groups.
The hip-hop legend announced plans for “She Got Game” weekend in Las Vegas from July 16 to July 19, an event intended to honor members of the United States women’s national ice hockey team and other American female athletes who medaled during the Winter Games in Italy.
Flav said the idea for the celebration came after remarks from Donald Trump sparked debate about whether the women’s hockey team would accept a traditional White House invitation. Trump joked publicly that he would likely face criticism if he failed to invite the women’s team alongside the men’s squad, though the athletes ultimately declined the invitation.
In response, Flav, who has recently become a vocal supporter of women’s sports, began organizing a Vegas celebration to recognize the athletes on their own terms. Now the weekend will include an unexpected highlight: a concert by the Backstreet Boys.
Flav revealed that the group invited the Olympians to attend their Las Vegas show and meet the band backstage after he shared a video call with Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean.
“I saw the video that you posted the other day about the U.S. Women’s Olympic team,” McLean said during the call. “I was blown away. These ladies deserve their flowers. They deserve their respect.”
McLean then extended a personal invitation to the athletes.
“I want to invite all the ladies to the show in Vegas this summer,” he said. “I’m 100% serious. I’m a girl dad, bro. My daughters watching these young ladies achieve greatness inspires my kids.”
According to Flav, the Olympians will attend the show during the “She Got Game” weekend and will also be treated to a private meet-and-greet with the band. The rapper has increasingly used his platform to advocate for women’s sports, previously supporting Team USA athletes and calling for greater recognition of their accomplishments.
