Former NBA player Christian Wood has reportedly gained custody of his 2-year-old son after accusing his ex of a murder-for-hire plot, according to US Weekly.
Wood has also received a restraining order against his ex-girlfriend, Yasmine Lopez, according to the report.
Lopez has denied the accusation and has asked for court protection against Christian Wood, according to US Weekly. The report adds that Lopez also disputes that Wood has sole custody.
Wood, who played for the 76ers, Hornets, Bucks, Pelicans, Pistons, Rockets, Mavericks and Lakers in his NBA career, was in a relationship with Lopez from August of 2022 until December of 2022, according to US Weekly.
News from TMZ broke last month that in November intruders ordered a pizza to Wood’s home to see if anyone was there before breaking into it. Wood then grabbed a gun and fired three shots before the three intruders fled.
According to US Weekly, Wood believes that “the only reasonable conclusion is that they were there to kill me.”
He added that his ex was being “extremely vague and would not agree to any visitation for that week,” per the report.
“Ms. Lopez’s decision to keep our son away from me now stands out as alarming to me, given what occurred the very next day,” he said.
Wood also claims that Lopez posted “a violent King Von song with a gun emoji.”
“The lyrics of the song explicitly describe a murder for hire and retaliation killing,” Wood said, per US Weekly. “This post was highly unusual for Ms. Lopez, suspicious in timing, and deeply disturbing given what happened shortly after.”
“The coincidence, combined with her prior threats, history of violence, and the custody interference the day prior, leads me to reasonably believe it is more likely than not that she is responsible and/or connected to the attempt on my life.”
Yasmine Lopez has denied that she had any involvement in the break-in, according to US Weekly.
“The truth is I had no knowledge of what occurred in Christian’s house that night. I did not communicate with anyone involved,” she said, per the report. “I have never encouraged, instructed, or supported anyone seeking to harm [Wood]. I do not know the men he has referenced. I had absolutely no involvement in the incident.”
Christian Wood spent nine seasons in the NBA, appearing in 339 games. He averaged 13.6 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.
Wood’s best season came in 2020-21 with the Rockets when he averaged 21.0 points, 9.6 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.2 blocks per game.
He last appeared in an NBA game in the 2023-24 season with the Lakers, averaging 6.9 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.
