Former NBA veteran Malcolm Brogdon returns to UVA as advisor – The Virginian-Pilot


COLLEGE BASKETBALL

The University of Virginia has brought back former Cavaliers All-American and NBA standout Malcolm Brogdon for a newly-created position.

Brogdon has been named Strategic Advisor to Men’s Basketball, head coach Ryan Odom announced Tuesday.

Brogdon led UVA to 111 victories, four NCAA Tournaments, two ACC regular-season titles and one ACC Tournament championship from 2012-16. He finished his career ranked ninth on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,809 points.

He played nine seasons in the NBA from 2016-25 and served as Vice President of the National Basketball Players Association Executive Committee from 2019-25.

• Norfolk State guard Jordan Leaks plans to enter the transfer portal, according to The Athletic. The 6-3 sophomore from Hampton averaged 5.4 points and 3.4 rebounds a game this season.

• Virginia Tech center Christian Gurdak has announced his intention to enter the transfer portal, according to 247Sports. He averaged 5.6 points and 4.4 rebounds as a freshman this season.

• George Mason guard Kory Mincy will enter the transfer portal, he announced on social media. The All-Atlantic 10 second-team selection averaged 14.3 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.9 assists a game for the Patriots this season.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

NSU’s Hampton named NEC Pitcher of Week

Norfolk State pitcher Parker Hampton has earned Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Week honors.

The junior out of Bayside High in Virginia Beach tossed the Spartans’ first complete-game shutout since April 12, 2023, leading them to a 3-0 win over Mercyhurst.

NSU AD named MEAC Guardian of the Game

Norfolk State athletic director Dr. Melody Webb has been selected as a recipient of the MEAC Guardians of the Game Award.

The honor recognizes individuals who have made a lasting impact in sports through leadership, service and commitment to excellence.

Also earning the award is Alisha Tucker, the Deputy Director of Athletics at Hampton University.

Under Webb, the Spartans have won 23 MEAC championships since her appointment on July 1, 2020.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Former NSU star declares for WNBA draft

West Virginia forward Kierra Wheeler, who spent three seasons at Norfolk State, has announced that she has declared for the WNBA draft.

The 6-1 Minneapolis native averaged 13.4 points and 7.5 rebounds this season, helping the No. 11 Mountaineers go 28-7 with a Big 12 Tournament championship and a second-round NCAA Tournament appearance.

Wheeler averaged nearly a double-double in her three seasons with the Spartans from 2022-25.

COLLEGE LACROSSE

HU’s Bardonille Jr. named CAA Rookie of Week

Hampton University’s Anthony Bardonille Jr. has been named CAA Rookie of the Week for the second time this season.

The freshman from Washington, D.C., tied a school record with six goals Saturday in a 20-10 loss at Monmouth. He leads the team with 26 goals and nine assists this season.

• Grassfield’s Lauren Priester has been named to the VHSL Class 6 all-state girls basketball second team.

• Norfolk State’s Regina Urbiola has been named the MEAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week. The junior from Mexico went 4-0 in singles play and 3-0 in doubles while helping the Spartans go 3-1 in the MEAC Tennis Round Up.

• Christopher Newport women’s tennis player Kylie Schaefer has been named the C2C Player of the Week for the second time this season.

• Norfolk State men’s tennis players Szymon Janzen and Marcin Andrzejczak swept MEAC honors this week, with Janzen named Player of the Week and Andrzejczak Rookie of the Week.
