Small-town life doesn’t have to mean small life growth. One Globe student is on track toward her dream of fashion design after being accepted to Vogue College of Fashion’s summer program in New York City. Even with limited resources, she is making that dream a reality through hard work and crowdfunding. Shekina Glory Dara is a 16-year-old immigrant from Hyderabad, India, who arrived in Globe in 2024. With a strong drive for her interests, the region has shown her what community support looks like.
With an interest in fashion for years, Dara has self-studied designers, explored fashion journalism and paid close attention to the business side of the industry. Her rich cultural background and international experience have shaped an eye that goes beyond the typical perception of young people interested in fashion—her approach is rooted in sociocultural awareness, with global perspective as her driving force.
“Fashion for me is very connected to culture and identity,” Dara explains. “Growing up, I’ve seen how clothing can represent tradition, storytelling, and artistry, especially through things like color, fabric, and design. At the same time, being in the U.S. now has shown me how fashion can also be a form of individuality and self-expression.
“To me, global fashion means blending different cultures, perspectives and styles. It’s like a shared language where creativity and identity come together, even if the origins are different.”
Vogue College of Fashion Summer School is a two-week intensive program that connects pre-college students with like-minded peers and industry professionals. Instructors are actively working in the fashion world, offering real-world insight into how to build a path in the industry. The total cost of the program is just south of $8,000—a price point that can be out of reach for many in the area.
When Dara received her acceptance letter earlier this year, excitement quickly followed. “I was freaking out, running and jumping around the house,” she said. “I think the 7-year-old me would rip the whole house down.” As the excitement settled and reality set in, Dara chose not to let the cost deter her. Instead, she leaned into building connections and sharing her story. By reaching out to local clubs, newspapers, nonprofits, and community members, she has developed skills in communication, networking, and fundraising through her GoFundMe campaign. With steady support coming in, she reflects on the experience with gratitude. “Even though I’m new to the area, the support I’ve received from people and organizations in the community has been incredible,” Dara said.
The Copper Corridor has continued to show that support, even for its newest residents. Dara also credits her family as a strong foundation in her journey. “My family has always encouraged me to pursue my interests and education, so being accepted into this program was something we were all very proud and excited about,” she said.
Through her determination and ambition, Dara’s path toward her dream is already taking shape. Her motivation is clear. “This opportunity means a lot to me because it allows me to explore a field I’m passionate about while learning from professionals in the industry,” she explained.
