Future Fashion And Technofeudalism Edition – Bwog

Hello and welcome back to Science Fair, Bwog’s weekly roundup of science events happening around campus. There are some super lovely and woke events this week, check them out! As always, email science@bwog.com if you want your event featured.

Technofeudal Fever Dreams: Silicon Fiefdoms, Doom Loop Dystopics, and the Urban Anxieties of Empire

  • Thursday, April 2, 12:15 pm to 1:45 pm.
  • Heyman Center (Second Floor Common Room). Open to Columbia University ID holders; registration required.
  • Silicon Valley investors are carving out exclusive enclaves worldwide with visions of creating new cities for their peers—often based on narratives about “doomed” San Francisco. Erin McElroy, Associate Professor of Geography at University of Washington, questions what it means that these projects fantasize about seceding from the state while many funders simultaneously try to co-opt state power itself. She traces how many of these technofeudal fever dreams fail in imperial sandboxes, suggesting that failure is an important analytic for provincializing sensationalist narratives cast by today’s technocapitalists. More information.

Connecting Sustainable Fashion Initiatives Across Universities

  • Thursday, April 2, 4:40 pm to 7:00 pm.
  • Forum, 601 West 125th Street. Registration required.
  • Explore how NYC-area universities are driving sustainable fashion through education, collaboration, and action. This event aims to map the current landscape of sustainable fashion initiatives across universities: where momentum is building, where gaps remain, and where there are opportunities to learn from and collaborate with one another. Free and open to the public. More information.
