Grace Lillian Lee, one of Australia’s best fashion designers, has conquered the global art scene without leaving Cairns


Grace Lillian Lee has just returned from Paris, where she showed her wearable sculptures during couture week and was named one of the world’s 500 most influential people in fashion at a star-studded gala thrown by style bible The Business of Fashion (BoF). She is, without a doubt, a fashion insider. But the idea makes her laugh. “No! It’s definitely been an incredible opportunity. I’m very excited and honoured. But no.”

In the past decade, the 37-year-old Cairns-based artist has become one of Australia’s most distinctive creative voices, a designer whose sculptures are equally at home in the rarefied confines of an art gallery as they are on a runway. Each of her intricate pieces takes months to create and draws upon an ancient Torres Strait Island weaving technique inspired by the undulations of a grasshopper’s belly.
