Greece is closely monitoring developments in Iran and the wider Middle East following a joint US-Israel strike, the Greek Foreign Ministry said Saturday, expressing concern over regional stability.
In a statement, the ministry said it had activated its Crisis Management Unit to provide consular assistance to citizens in need, while Greek diplomatic missions in affected areas remain on high alert. Greek nationals were urged to exercise caution and stay in contact with embassies and consulates. Authorities said a coordinated repatriation operation would be launched if necessary.
The ministry also underscored the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation in the region.
Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis is in constant communication with his counterparts in allied countries, the statement said. It stressed that international oversight of Iran’s nuclear and ballistic programs is essential to prevent the country from acquiring nuclear weapons, a step seen as critical for regional stability and peace.
The ministry added that protecting civilians, upholding international law, and respecting human rights must remain a priority. The issues are scheduled for discussion at an emergency session of Greece’s National Security Governmental Council (KYSEA), the country’s top decision-making body for foreign affairs and defense matters, later Saturday.
