Relations between Athens and New Delhi reached a new milestone on Monday as Greek National Defense Minister Nikos Dendias and Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh signed a landmark agreement on defense industry cooperation.
The deal marks the first in a series of planned agreements designed to integrate the defense ecosystems of both nations.
India to assist Greece in defense innovation
Following high-level talks in New Delhi, Dendias emphasized that the partnership offers Greece a unique gateway to innovation and joint product development. “India is a country of 1.4 billion people with a 1.5-million-strong military; for Greece, this is an extraordinarily important strategic relationship,” Dendias noted.
He specifically highlighted shared military assets, such as the Rafale fighter jet, as a foundation for technical synergy.
In a major move for regional security, Greece announced it will post a Greek International Liaison Officer at India’s Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) in Gurugram.
This signals that Greece (a major seafaring nation) and India are aligning their maritime security interests, specifically regarding stability in the Mediterranean and the Indo-Pacific.
Beyond security, Dendias characterized the alliance as a “long-horizon” shift that could fundamentally redefine the economic landscape between the two countries.
During his visit, the Greek minister also visited the Defense Production Center of India’s Defense Ministry in New Delhi, where he was provided with presentations on prospects of cooperation in defense innovation and technology.
