The United Nations Security Council on Wednesday adopted a resolution calling on Iran to immediately halt its attacks against Gulf states, warning that the strikes violate international law and pose a serious threat to international peace and security.
The resolution, submitted by Bahrain and Jordan, was co-sponsored by 135 UN member states, including Greece, and urges Tehran to stop military actions targeting countries in the Gulf and the wider region.
Speaking in an explanation of vote, Greece’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Aglaia Balta, reiterated the country’s strong condemnation of Iranian attacks against Gulf countries and the broader region. She said Greece was among the first countries to co-sponsor the Bahrain-Jordan draft resolution.
Balta expressed Greece’s deep concern over the ongoing military escalation and urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and re-establish credible channels for dialogue.
She went on to warn of the growing consequences of the conflict for maritime security, global trade and energy supplies, noting that instability in the Gulf could disrupt shipping routes and international energy markets.
Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani said the resolution adopted by the Security Council on Wednesday, which does not mention that US and Israeli strikes launched the war, “deliberately ignores the root causes of the current crisis,” the Associated Press reported. [Combined reports]
