Greece braces for Storm ERMINIO with heavy rain, gales and snowfall Greek City Times

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service has issued an emergency weather bulletin warning of severe conditions as storm ERMINIO moves across the country.

The weather system, which formed in the western Mediterranean, is expected to impact most of Greece from Wednesday, April 1 through Thursday, April 2, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, gale-force winds and snowfall.

Severe weather expected across Greece

According to the bulletin, intense and prolonged rainfall, storms and even hail are forecast across multiple regions.

Strong easterly to southeasterly winds of 8 to 9 Beaufort are expected in eastern parts of Greece, while gusts in the Dodecanese could reach 10 Beaufort.

At higher elevations, particularly in Epirus and Macedonia, heavy snowfall is also expected.

Wednesday forecast (April 1)

Storm ERMINIO will intensify as a low-pressure system forms over Libya and moves northeast.

Heavy rain and storms are expected:

• Ionian Islands – early morning (orange warning)
• Eastern Peloponnese, eastern Sterea, Evia, Thessaly, Sporades – late morning to night (red warning)
• Attica – midday to evening (red warning)
• Cyclades and Eastern Aegean islands (including Chios southwards) – afternoon to night (orange warning)
• Dodecanese – from afternoon (red warning)

Thursday forecast (April 2)

Severe conditions will continue into Thursday across several regions:

• Western and southern Peloponnese – morning to night (red warning)
• Eastern Thessaly (Larissa, Magnesia, Sporades) – early morning to midday (orange warning)
• Central Macedonia (Pieria, Imathia, Chalkidiki, Serres) – morning to afternoon (orange warning)
• Crete (mainly west and south) – midday to night (red warning)
• Eastern Aegean islands – from late afternoon (orange warning)
• Dodecanese – early morning (red warning) and again later in the day (orange warning)

Authorities are urging residents to remain cautious, limit unnecessary travel, and follow official guidance as the severe weather system moves through the country.
