Greece has climbed 24 places in the global fixed broadband speed rankings, reflecting steady progress in digital infrastructure investment over the past year.
According to data from Ookla, the country ranked 72nd worldwide in January 2026, with a median download speed of 92.79 Mbps – up from 96th place in 2024 and near the 100th position in 2019.

The improvement comes amid accelerated deployment of fiber-optic networks and ultra-fast broadband infrastructure across the country.
A key driver is the Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFBB) project, the largest public investment in telecommunications infrastructure ever implemented in Greece.
With a total budget of 829 million euros, the public-private partnership project is co-financed by EU structural funds and private capital.
Commercial rollout of UFBB services began gradually in December 2025, targeting areas previously underserved by private investment. Once fully deployed, the project is expected to benefit approximately 830,000 households and businesses, as well as around 10,000 public buildings, including schools and health centers.
Fiber network coverage has now approached 60 percent nationwide, marking a sharp increase compared to near-zero availability just a few years ago.
The Ministry of Digital Governance has also supported the expansion through targeted initiatives such as the Gigabit Voucher and Smart Readiness programs, designed to encourage adoption of high-speed connections and modern digital infrastructure.
The continued rollout of ultra-fast broadband is expected to strengthen business competitiveness, reduce the digital divide between urban and regional areas, and support Greece’s broader digital transformation agenda.
