Migration Minister Thanos Plevris said in a social media post that the first age tests have been conducted on migrants claiming to be minors.

According to Plevris, the tests were carried out following a joint ministerial decision issued in August, which introduced additional medical checks for age verification.

He added that, out of more than 100 cases examined, the majority were found to be adults.

“Of the first 104 suspected cases examined, 59 were found to be adults. The consequences for those who made false declarations are self-evident,” Plevris wrote.

A joint statement from the Ministries of Migration and Asylum and Education said that age determination is conducted through a combination of methods: medical assessment, psychosocial evaluation, and an X-ray of the left wrist/hand to determine bone age.

In cases where the results differ, the X-ray assessment takes precedence.
