Greece is examining the possibility of banning the burqa for minors, according to Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Thanos Plevris. Speaking on 27 February 2026, Plevris referenced a study by Deputy Minister Sevi Voloudaki that reviewed how other European countries handle the issue.
“Some countries have already banned the burqa, and the European Court of Human Rights has ruled such bans as legal,” Plevris said. “We are not referring to the headscarf; the burqa completely covers a woman’s facial features. Greece does not face the same level of burqa-related issues as some other European countries. Nevertheless, it concerns us, particularly when it comes to minors, who do not have the choice and are subjected to it.”
He added: “We do not want children attending school or facilities where minors are accommodated to wear the burqa.”
The government has yet to decide on the specific details or scope of the potential ban, with discussions focusing primarily on its application to children and adolescents.
