Greece on Thursday expressed its “sincere condolences” over a deadly fire at the Swiss alpine resort of Crans-Montana, which left over 40 people dead and dozens injured at a New Year’s celebration.

In a post on X, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is “profoundly shocked by the tragic event.”

“Our sincere condolences go to the families of the victims. We wish a swift recovery for those injured,” it said.

The Associated Press has reported that at least 40 people are presumed dead and more than 115 injured, some of them critically, after a fire tore through the bar at around 1.30 a.m.

The upscale resort town is a popular skiing and golfing destination, while the bar where the blaze took place, Le Constellation, is frequented mostly by young people.

Greek diplomatic authorities “continue to monitor the situation closely and stand ready to provide any assistance required,” the Foreign Ministry said, though there were no reports of any Greek nationals having been killed or injured in the blaze.
