Athens has reiterated to the United States its interest in acquiring the medium-range air-to-air AIM-120D missiles for its F-35 fighter jets.

According to sources, Washington had initially maintained a negative stance.

However, Greece is now arguing that it needs the missiles to maintain the balance of power in the Aegean, following Turkey’s planned acquisition of Meteor missiles for its Eurofighter jets.

The same sources note that if the United States maintains its negative position, Athens will proceed to equip its 20 F-35s with Meteor missiles instead, placing a new order with MBDA.

Moreover, the Greek side has already expressed interest in the AIM-260 JATM (Joint Advanced Tactical Missile), which is expected to replace the AIM-120 in the coming years.
