Defense Minister Nikos Dendias and Culture Minister Lina Mendoni signed a joint decision on Tuesday to establish a committee to maintain the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the ministries announced.
The committee, which will convene for six months, will include a defense ministry official, a high-ranking Army officer, two culture ministry technical and conservation heads, and a professor and sculptor.
The monument, located on the parliament building in Syntagma, central Athens, was sculpted in the 1930s as a memorial honoring Greeks killed in war.
In October 2025, the Greek parliament passed a controversial law that banned demonstrations in the square directly in front of the Tomb. The law also shifted maintenance responsibility of the monument itself to the Defense Ministry, while public order around it stayed with the Citizen Protection Ministry.
The move followed incidents and rallies that renewed debate over appropriate behavior in the area.
