Greece has no intention of becoming involved in Gulf war, Gerapetritis says

Greece has no intention of becoming involved in the US- and Israel-led attacks on Iran, Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said Monday.

Arriving for a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Gerapetritis also called for the free movement of shipping through the Gulf area, and urged Iran to “respect the rules of the Law of the Sea.”

“Greece has no intention of becoming involved in the war,” Gerapetritis said. “Greece stands in solidarity with the countries that have been affected, the Gulf countries, and is offering defense assistance to Cyprus.”

Gerapetritis also said he would bring up with his EU colleagues the recent attack on a Greek merchant ship in the Black Sea, calling for “full condemnation and accountability.”

Speaking later Monday, government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said Greece will not become involved in any potential naval operation to protect shipping transiting the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf from Iranian attack.
