Starting April 1, thousands of vehicle owners in Greece will be able to put their cars and motorcycles back on the road through the country’s digital myCar platform by paying road tax on a monthly basis.
The change will allow drivers to lift a vehicle’s inactive status and pay road tax only for the period they plan to use it through the end of the year. As a result, the system offers greater flexibility for owners who do not need their vehicles year-round, especially during busy travel periods such as the Easter or summer holidays, without adding charges beyond the selected period.
More than 120,000 owners are expected to benefit from the measure. Many had already withdrawn their license plates, with a large number doing so since December 2025.
How Greece will calculate road tax
Under the new framework, road tax will be calculated on a proportional basis. Drivers will pay one-twelfth of the annual road tax for each month they put their vehicle back into use.
For example, a vehicle with an annual road tax charge of 300 euros ($345) would cost 100 euros ($115) for four months of use. Likewise, a vehicle with an annual fee of 500 euros ($575) would cost 125 euros ($143) for three months.
Overall, the arrangement is designed to make temporary vehicle reactivation more practical and affordable for owners who want to use their vehicles only during specific periods of the year.
Steps to reactivate a vehicle through myCar
To lift a vehicle’s inactive status, owners must log in to the myCar platform using their tax credentials, select the inactive vehicle registered in their name, and pay the corresponding road tax for the period they choose.
Before granting approval, the platform will run an online check to confirm that the vehicle is insured. Once that verification is complete, owners can submit the request.
If owners had physically deposited their license plates with tax offices, they will also need to apply to retrieve them.
In cases of joint ownership, all co-owners must approve the request electronically before the process can move forward.
Greece limits vehicle reactivation to once a year
Authorities have made clear that owners can lift a vehicle’s inactive status only once per year.
Once the selected usage period ends, owners must declare the vehicle inactive again or face significant fines.
