Three years after the tragedy in Tempi, the Greek government has launched the digital platform railway.gov.gr, a real-time monitoring system for the national railway network that allows users to track the position of trains, their speed, direction of travel, estimated arrival times, and any delays.
Initially, the system covers the Athens-Thessaloniki corridor, with all trains in the network to be equipped with high-precision satellite tracking systems by the end of April.
Centimeter-level monitoring
According to the authorities, the platform uses satellite data to determine the position of trains with centimeter-level accuracy, even in tunnels or areas with poor signal reception.
The system integrates GNSS technologies and inertial sensors, and the data is transmitted to the control center of the infrastructure manager, OSE.
The platform provides public access to information on: The expansion is planned for the entire national network, approximately 2,000 km.
- the real-time position of trains;
- speed and direction of travel;
- arrival estimates;
- recorded delays.
Measure adopted after the Tempi tragedy
The launch of the platform comes almost three years after the train collision in Tempi on February 28, 2023, which claimed 57 lives.
The authorities have stated that railway.gov.gr implements seven safety recommendations made following the accident investigation and functions as a permanent tool for operational monitoring, risk analysis, and incident prevention.
Deputy Minister of Transport Konstantinos Kyranakis said the new system is an important step in enhancing safety and transparency in the operation of the railway network.
Part of a broader modernization program
The platform is part of a broader program to modernize the Greek rail sector, which includes:
- the introduction of new rolling stock by the operator Hellenic Train;
- the modernization of signaling and control systems;
- organizational reforms within railway entities.
