The government launched a new digital platform, railway.gov.gr, on Wednesday for real-time monitoring of the national railway network.
The system, initially covering the Athens–Thessaloniki route, allows the public to track trains’ locations, speeds, directions, estimated arrivals and delays. Officials said the platform will expand across the network, with all trains equipped with high-precision satellite tracking by the end of April.
Officials added that railway.gov.gr implements seven safety recommendations from the investigation of the 2023 Tempe train collision tragedy and serves as a continuous monitoring tool to enhance operational safety, risk management and incident analysis.
Deputy Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis said the platform uses satellite data, allowing train positions to be determined to the nearest centimeter and ensuring accuracy in tunnels or low-signal areas.
The platform complements broader modernization efforts, including new trains, upgraded signaling, control systems and organizational reforms within the national rail operator.
