On Saturday, February 28, 2026, Greece will witness large-scale strikes, rallies and memorial events marking the third anniversary of the Tempi train disaster, which claimed 57 lives.
Major gatherings are planned in Athens and Thessaloniki, while commemorations will take place in dozens of cities across the country.
In Athens, the central rally will be held at starting at 12:00 pm.
In Thessaloniki, the main gathering is scheduled for 12:00 pm at the Venizelos monument.
Who is taking part in the strike?
Several major trade unions and sectoral federations have announced their participation, including:
- The Federation of Private Employees
- The Federation of Construction Workers
- The Federation of Attica Craftsmen
- The Union of Greek Actors
Theatres across the country will remain closed for the day.
The has declared a 24-hour strike, meaning ships will remain docked in ports.
Rail workers are also staging a 24-hour strike. announced that no train services will operate across the entire rail network on February 28.
How public transport will operate in Attica
Buses and trams will operate from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, mainly to facilitate travel to and from the rallies.
Athens Metro:
- Lines 2 and 3: No service from the start of the shift until 9:00 am.
- Line 1: Services will run from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.
Last departures from terminal stations are scheduled between approximately 8:30 pm and 9:00 pm, depending on direction.
The tram will gradually begin operations from 9:30 am. Vehicles will start withdrawing from service at 7:00 pm, and the usual Saturday night tram service has been cancelled.
Thessaloniki
In the Thessaloniki Metro, six stations will be closed from 10:00 am: Railway Station, Dimokratias, Venizelou, Agias Sofias, University and Sintrivani.
Memorial events
In Thessaloniki, on the eve of the anniversary, Metropolitan Philotheos will lead an all-night vigil from 9:00 pm to 12:15 am at the Church of the Three Hierarchs located within the Aristotle University campus.
At 10:00 pm, student groups have called for a gathering at the memorial plaque bearing the names of the 13 students who lost their lives in the disaster.
Civil society organisations, student associations and labour centres are expected to participate in commemorations across the country.
