Errikos Ntynan Hospital marked a major milestone in endocrine surgery in Greece by performing the country’s first robotic transoral thyroidectomy. The procedure, carried out by the Clinic of Endocrine Surgery and the Parathyroid Surgery Department, introduces advanced robotic technology into thyroid operations.
The surgical team, led by Clinic Director Kyriakos Vamvakidis in collaboration with internationally renowned surgeon Professor Seokmo Kim from South Korea, successfully completed the thyroidectomy on a 42-year-old patient from Athens. Using a state-of-the-art robotic system, the team achieved exceptional precision, stability, and control throughout the procedure. Notably, the operation involved no neck incisions, instead accessing the thyroid through the oral cavity, resulting in minimal bleeding and a shorter recovery period. The patient was discharged the day after surgery and quickly returned to her daily routine.
“The precision and technological advantages of robotic surgery open new possibilities for thyroid procedures. While not all patients are suitable for transoral robotic thyroidectomy, careful evaluation allows many to benefit from this method,” said Mr Vamvakidis, noting that traditional thyroid surgery in Greece had relied on open neck incisions or, less commonly, non-robotic endoscopic approaches.
