Greece plans to further extend Evros border fence

Greece plans to further extend Evros border fence

Greece will extend its border fence along the Evros river to cover the entire length of the frontier with Turkey, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Wednesday.

Speaking during a visit to the flood-afflicted Evros area, Mitsotakis also said more border guards and cameras will be sent to the area, where tens of thousands of migrants tried unsuccessfully to break through from Turkey in 2020. He didn’t offer a timeline.

So far this year 1,100 of the total 3,090 people who have entered Greece illegally crossed the Evros land border, according to United Nations data. Last year, about 7,000 of the total 41,700 migrants who arrived in Greece came in through the Evros area.
