Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the government’s priority was to ensure Greece maintained stability and a “steady hand on the helm” amid increasingly uncertain international developments.
In his weekly review of government work, the Greek prime minister highlighted Greece’s support for Cyprus when tensions in the Middle East threatened the island. He said Greece acted immediately, while European partners also helped establish an air and naval protection network around the island.
Mitsotakis also reported that Greece had organised assistance for citizens located in areas of conflict. Over the past five days, authorities repatriated 1,039 people from Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Israel, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and the Palestinian territories.
On the previous day alone, 90 citizens returned to Athens from Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain via Dammam in Saudi Arabia on a C-130 aircraft operated by the Hellenic Air Force, while another 448 people arrived from Dubai on a special flight. Authorities used chartered aircraft, military planes and land transport to complete the repatriation operations.
The prime minister said the government would also respond to any economic consequences caused by regional instability, including possible energy market disruptions or price increases in goods due to higher production and shipping costs.
Mitsotakis argued that the international environment had become increasingly unpredictable and said governments must base policy decisions on national interests rather than ideology. He added that internal political stability had become a strategic advantage for countries during global geopolitical shifts.
“The main concern of the government is that in the uncharted waters of international developments, the country has a steady hand on its helm,” he said.
In the same review, Mitsotakis noted that the Hellenic Parliament approved legislation extending postal voting to national elections for Greeks living abroad starting in 2027. He also highlighted initiatives including the “All Digital” programme aimed at improving digital skills among older citizens and people with disabilities, as well as new labour agreements and investments in air navigation systems in cooperation with Eurocontrol.
