As the summer tourism season approaches, Greece is launching a recruitment drive to increase the number of doctors in its Aegean islands.
By offering a robust suite of financial and professional incentives, the government aims to draw National Health System (NHS) doctors to the Aegean, ensuring that both residents and millions of visitors have access to critical care during the year’s busiest months.
The 2nd Regional Health Authority of Piraeus and the Aegean—which oversees hospitals and health centers across the islands—has issued an open invitation to entice doctors to relocate, offering a highly competitive package of both financial and institutional incentives.
The incentive breakdown for doctors in the Aegean islands
The initiative operates on multiple levels to ensure that both popular tourist hubs and remote outposts receive adequate medical coverage.
1. The government package
Doctors from across the country who agree to temporary relocation to the island health structures will receive:
- €2,100 ($2,400) in additional monthly compensation.
- Full coverage of travel and accommodation expenses.
- A standard daily out-of-office allowance.
Target Islands for this tier include: Tinos, Karlovasi (Samos), Mykonos, Ios, Milos, Amorgos, Patmos, Galatas, Aegina, Paros, Andros, Symi, Kea, Sifnos, Megisti (Castellorizo), Lipsi, Donousa, Schinoussa, Tilos, Serifos, Folegandros, Anafi, Sikinos, Nisyros, Agathonisi, Chalki, Kythnos, Irakleia, Fournoi, and Spetses.
2. The private philanthropy boost
In a crucial public-private partnership, the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation (founded by Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou) is stepping in with targeted support. The foundation is offering an additional €1,500 per month to doctors ($1,700) serving on islands with a population under 4,000.
This initiative focuses heavily on isolated and hard-to-reach areas where healthcare access is severely limited.
Eligible islands for the Foundation grant include: Agistri, Antikythera, Poros, Spetses, Hydra, Agios Efstratios, Psara, Oinousses, Anafi, Sikinos, Folegandros, Agathonisi, Astypalaia, Lipsi, Arkioi, Kasos, Kea, Kythnos, Nisyros, Kimolos, Serifos, Sifnos, Donousa, Irakleia, Koufonisia, Schinoussa, Antiparos, Megisti, Tilos, Chalki, Fournoi Korsaeon, Pserimos, Thirassia, Thymaina, Symi, Amorgos, and Ios.
To sweeten the deal further, local municipalities and regional governments are stepping up. Depending on the location, local authorities are offering supplementary benefits, including free housing, subsidized meals, or direct local financial bonuses.
