Greece Unveils Support Package for Households and Businesses

On Monday, March 23, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis unveiled a new set of measures aimed at easing the economic impact of the Middle East conflict on households and businesses.

Addressing the nation, Mitsotakis emphasized Greece’s dual approach: “We are at the forefront of shaping a unified European response, and until then, we act unilaterally at the national level.”

The prime minister outlined a 300 million euros support package covering April and May, focused on four key areas:

1. Diesel Subsidy: The government will subsidize diesel fuel across the distribution network by 0.16 euros per liter, resulting in a net reduction of 0.20 euros per liter including VAT.

2. Digital Fuel Card: To counter rising petrol costs, a Digital Fuel Card will be introduced, usable at fuel stations, public transport, and taxis. Average support is estimated at 0.36 euros per liter, translating to savings of around 50 euros over two months for the mainland and 60 euros for the islands, based on a typical consumption of 70 liters per month.

3. Agricultural Support: Farmers will receive a 15% subsidy on purchased fertilizers to cushion them from sudden price hikes.

4. Ferry Compensation: Ferry companies will receive government compensation linked to mandatory ticket discounts, aimed at keeping prices at last year’s levels.

Mitsotakis stressed that the initiative will be financed through public funds and a special tax on profits from online casino-style gambling operators, securing 100 million euros for the measures.
“These initiatives, enabled by prudent fiscal management, strengthen social protections in turbulent times without jeopardizing our achievements. We maintain reserves in case the global economic situation worsens significantly. The government remains steadfastly at the side of every Greek citizen,” he said.
