Greece welcomed its first baby of 2026 in the early hours of New Year’s Day on the island of Crete, ushering in the new year with a moment of celebration and optimism.
The first birth of the year was a healthy baby boy, delivered by cesarean section shortly after 3 a.m. at a public hospital in Heraklion, Crete’s largest city. The newborn weighed more than 4 kilograms (about 8.8 pounds) and was reported to be in excellent health, bringing joy to his family and the medical staff on duty during the holiday night.
A few hours later, a baby girl was born at a private clinic in Chania, a coastal city in western Crete. Her arrival added to the festive atmosphere of New Year’s morning, delighting her parents and the clinic’s staff as the year began.
Both newborns and their mothers were reported to be doing well, offering a hopeful and heartwarming start to the year.
