Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis held a phone call Saturday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, following an initiative by the Israeli side, according to a statement from the Greek government.
During the conversation, Mitsotakis stressed the urgent need for de-escalation in the region. While acknowledging that Iran must not obtain a nuclear arsenal, he emphasized that diplomacy is the only viable path forward and warned against opening new fronts of conflict in the Middle East.
The Greek leader also reiterated the necessity of an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, the release of hostages and the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid to civilians in need.
The call comes amid rising violence between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, causing a severe humanitarian crisis with displaced civilians and critical shortages. Greece has sent aid through Egypt and has urged the country to respect Greek activists delivering relief, calling for safe, unhindered humanitarian access.
Regarding wider regional developments, Israel recently launched strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, killing commanders and damaging key facilities. Iran responded with missile attacks on Israel, escalating regional tensions.
