A new film starring Gerard Butler that predicts a future global disaster is being released in the U.S. next week.
Greenland 2: Migration is a sequel to 2020’s Greenland, which starred Butler alongside Deadpool actress Morena Baccarin and Jojo Rabbit star Roger Dale Ford as the Garritys, a family forced to flee their home in Atlanta, Georgia, after a planet-destroying comet lays waste to much of civilization.
Having learned that many of the survivors are heading to a bunker located in Greenland, the Garritys embark on an epic and often deadly journey to get to safety.
By the end of the first film—SPOILER ALERT—the family, along with several other survivors, reach the bunker and, after nine months waiting for the Earth’s atmosphere to clear, emerge to begin the process of rebuilding human life and society.
Unfortunately, it would appear any peace was short-lived, with Greenland 2: Migration picking up the story with the Garritys all returning and once again on the run, fighting for their lives and searching for a safe place to live.

Plot details for the sequel remain scarce. An official synopsis reads: “In the aftermath of a comet strike that decimated most of the earth, Greenland 2: Migration follows the Garrity family as they’re forced to leave the safety of their bunker in Greenland to traverse a shattered world in search of a new home.”
Though the specifics are unclear, the trailer for the film indicates plenty in the way of action with the Garritys shown facing off against giant tsunamis, collapsing bridges on epic mountain passes and woodland firefights.
The nature of the natural disaster this time around is not known though the new trailer does show glimpses of comets disintegrating in the sky, which suggests it could be an escalation of what the first film delivered.
Greenland was originally intended to be released in cinemas back in June 2020, but the pandemic saw that release date pushed back several months. Ultimately, HBO purchased the pay TV and streaming rights in the U.S. with the film making its small screen debut that December.
Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, best known for the Dwayne Johnson crime thriller Snitch and the prison drama Shot Caller, Greenland earned positive reviews and currently boasts a 77 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Waugh had previously worked with Butler on Angel Has Fallen and comes from a background in stunt work. That experience proved crucial in shaping some of Greenland’s most-memorable set pieces and is reason enough to expect something similar from the sequel.
Greenland 2: Migration arrives in theaters on January 9.
