Heavy Rains Cause Disruptions and Flood Risks Across Greece

As reported by Ekathimerini

Heavy downpours have swept across a large portion of Greece, causing disruptions to infrastructure and partial road closures, including a stretch of the Athens–Corinth National Highway.

According to meteorological and crisis services, the heavy rainfall hit Attica, the southern and eastern parts of the Peloponnese, Crete, the eastern part of Central Greece, Euboea, the Sporades, eastern Thessaly, central Macedonia, and the eastern and northern islands of the Aegean Sea.

Local authorities via the 112 system regularly sent emergency messages, urging citizens to avoid travel and to stay away from basements and lower floors of buildings.

Restrictions and Schools

In the Attica region, a decision has been made to close all primary and secondary schools on Friday due to the threat of flooding and heavy downpours.

The Greek Ministry of Internal Affairs said that public-sector workers who cannot reach their workplaces due to the bad weather will be considered absent; they also urged passengers to travel only under safe conditions.

Risk Assessment and Weather Forecast

The Greek Risk Assessment Committee is due to convene at noon to reassess the development of events and potential consequences of the weather.

The National Meteorological Service (EMY) forecasts ongoing rain and thunderstorms, particularly in central Macedonia, Thessaly, the Sporades, eastern Central Greece, Euboea, the Cyclades, Crete, the eastern Aegean Islands, the Dodecanese, and in the eastern and southern parts of the Peloponnese during the morning.

As previously reported, in Portugal during Storm Claudia, three people were killed and dozens were injured.
