The global Greek diaspora marked an important moment for Greece this December, as The Hellenic Initiative raised a record 2.7 million dollars in New York. The achievement came through a series of sold-out events that highlighted Greece’s progress, its remaining challenges, and the expanding role of the diaspora in supporting sustainable development.
Founded in 2012, The Hellenic Initiative is the only global non-profit organization uniting Hellenes and Philhellenes around a shared philanthropic mission focused on investing in Greece’s future. Since its founding, the organization has raised more than 38 million dollars and has grown into the largest Greek diaspora organization in the world.
Rather than focusing on short-term relief, the New York events underscored a long-term vision for Greece. One centered on investment in people, jobs, and opportunity, supported by transparency and measurable results.

Corporate leadership supporting Greece’s workforce
A central highlight of the week was The Hellenic Initiative’s first Annual Corporate Dinner, held at the Union League Club. The event honored Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey and spotlighted Regeneration, the employment and training program co-founded by the Hellenic Initiative and Coca-Cola in 2014.
Regeneration has grown into Greece’s largest workforce development initiative for young graduates, resulting in more than 5,000 hires across over 2,000 companies. The program demonstrates how global corporations and diaspora-led organizations can work together to address national challenges such as youth unemployment and the brain drain.

New York gala highlights Greece and the mission of the Hellenic Initiative
The 13th Annual New York Gala at Cipriani Wall Street served as the centerpiece of the fundraising week, welcoming more than 865 guests from around the world. Business leaders, policymakers, and supporters of Greece gathered to reinforce confidence in the country’s future and in the effectiveness of diaspora-driven philanthropy.
A short film narrated by actor Hugh Jackman highlighted The Hellenic Initiative’s impact and vision, while the announcement of the record-breaking total set the tone for an evening defined by unity and forward momentum.

Honoring a life of achievement and values
One of the most emotional moments of the gala was the presentation of the 2025 Hellenic Initiative Lifetime Achievement Award to entrepreneur John Payiavlas. A son of immigrants, Payiavlas was recognized for building AVI Foodsystems into the largest privately owned contract food service company in the United States.
In his remarks, he spoke about family, unity, and purpose, calling on Greeks and Philhellenes to support institutions that strengthen Greece not only today, but for generations to come.

Hellenic Initiative’s leadership reflections on a record breaking week
Commenting on the significance of the fundraising milestone, THI Co-Founder and President George P. Stamas said the record-breaking week demonstrated what can be achieved when Hellenes and Philhellenes unite with purpose. He noted that while the funds raised are a source of pride, they are matched by deep gratitude toward the global community whose enduring commitment continues to drive the organization’s mission.
From a broader perspective, the results also highlighted the practical impact of diaspora support. John Koudounis, Vice Chair of THI, emphasized that each contribution translates into tangible outcomes across Greece, including families supported, jobs created, and new opportunities unlocked.
Looking ahead, the energy generated throughout the New York events was cited as a clear indicator of sustained momentum. Vice Chair Michael Psaros described the week as proof that the diaspora is energized, united, and firmly committed to delivering meaningful and lasting impact for Greece’s future.
