Usually, when you think of a low-rise silhouette, what comes to mind is ’70s hip-huggers, Y2K style, or the way Gen Z wears their oversized pants. But this season, designers took it upon themselves to make hip-grazing bottoms feel oh-so-sophisticated. Across the board at every major Fashion Week, we saw low-rise skirts in looks that read as adult and work-friendly but also deeply cool.
At New York Fashion Week back in September, Tory Burch led the charge with a lineup of pencil and box-pleat midi skirts that sat perfectly at the hips. The low waists made these otherwise-polished silhouettes feel suddenly fresh. Then, in Milan, Paloma Esser walked down the Boss runway wearing a low-rise pencil skirt with a button-down and a cardigan—back-to-work style with an edge. Finally, in Paris, Matthieu Blazy’s debut Chanel collection included a lineup of low-slung tweed skirt suits. Instead of reading as stuffy, they presented a newfound ease.
The formula for this new skirt uniform is simple. Across the board in every city, low-rise skirts were styled with statement belts—which are also a trend in themselves this season.
When it comes to footwear, an almond-toe kitten-heeled pump is the chicest way to go. The ladylike silhouette balances the more laid-back skirt rise, creating a vibe that’s at once effortless and polished.
But what to put on top? This isn’t one of those low-rise looks that demands a sliver of midriff. A full-torso top in a size up—think oversized shirting, an elongated cardigan, et cetera—will add some volume, balancing out the sleekness on the bottom. For low-rise skirts with a bit more swing, try a long tank top or a bodysuit for the opposite effect.
You could also take a page out of Chanel’s runway styling and add a mid-rise underpinning underneath your low-rise skirt. Let it peek out to hold in your tucked-in top, creating a slight feel of undone that’s subtly sexy and unexpected. Try a hosiery-like bike short to get the full effect without altering the straightforwardness of the skirt by itself.
Whether you’re looking for a pencil skirt, a skirt with some extra pep in its step thanks to preppy pleating, or a full skirt with built-in swing, below are a variety of options to get the look now.
