Aston Villa’s impressive season continues on Thursday when they travel to Bologna for the first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final tie.
Unai Emery is one of the season’s most accomplished coaches as he has guided his Midlands side to fourth in the Premier League at this stage of the campaign, five points clear of their nearest challengers, Liverpool.

So far, they are on course for a spot in the UEFA Champions League next season as a result of their fine form domestically, but they now have the chance to focus on some major silverware.

For Emery, the choice is now between maintaining his relatively limited resources to stay on course for a top-four finish, or take some risks for European glory.

A trip to Bologna would normally be considered a winnable fixture for Villa, with the Italians sitting in eighth place in Serie A.

There may be some concerns for Villa, with just one win in their last five fixtures.

Were they to suffer a reverse in Italy, Emery and the club’s fans could be concerned that momentum has left them, so they may choose to prioritise a win in the Europa League despite any risks of injury and fatigue towards the end of the season.

The return leg takes place on Thursday, April 16, at Villa Park.
