Some days, I’m locked into my maximalist era, and I’m full-sending it: mixing and matching different prints and textures, going all in with bright colors, and playing around with layering techniques. Other days (ahem, honestly, most days), I keep things pretty simple with a plain tee/tank and a pair of jeans, aiming for that Hailey Bieber “I didn’t try, but I tried” vibe. You’d think that writing about fashion for a living means I’m always serving a look, but the truth is, I don’t have the energy to throw a ‘fit every day! Sue me!!
But the problem with those pared-back outfits is that they can feel… flat and boring. Like something’s missing, something that makes the look feel more intentional versus just thrown on. Enter: this silk scarf hack I’ve been seeing all over my feed. Basically, just tie a silk scarf around your hips like a belt and let it instantly elevate your basic top-and-bottoms combo. Not going to lie, this literally changed the way I dress and how I think about putting outfits together. I’m just annoyed I didn’t discover it sooner.
I first clocked silk scarves trending last summer—as headwraps, as neck scarves, very Eurosummer, very chic. But then, I started seeing them styled way differently—not on the neck or head, but around the waist. At first, I wasn’t sold. It just looked a little off to me. But the more I saw it, it grew on me.
And the best part? It’s ridiculously easy to pull off. Grab a silk scarf (medium to large works best), fold it into a triangle, and wrap it around your waist so the point falls to one side. That’s it! I tried it last week with a blue bandana-print scarf, and it completely transformed an otherwise bland tank–jeans–flats situation. Suddenly, it felt pulled together—a little less “I just put on whatever.” It’s amazing how one little piece of fabric can make a whole look that much more interesting.
And don’t get it twisted—this isn’t just for basics. There are no rules here! If anything, it’s even more fun with louder looks. I’m planning to wear them on my Italy beach vacation this year with crisp white pants, so it really pops!. Plus, they’re insanely versatile. Knot one on your purse, wear it as a headband, etc. BRB, while I add scarves to my cart in every color, from muted neutrals to full-on neon.
