Myha’la may play a brilliant financial analyst in Industry, but off-screen, the actress gave up trying to understand the world of finance.
During HBO’s Industry screening and conversation with Jessica Shaw on Monday, Feb. 16 in New York, Myha’la revealed that she attempted to learn finance for the series, set within a cutthroat investment bank, but eventually gave up.
“I honestly have up after season one,” Myha’a, 29, admitted. “I was like, there’s only so much I’m gonna understand about this.”
The actress, who plays Harper Stern in the drama series, explained that the cast has been “really lucky” because they have had financial advisors and consultants come to advise them. Myha’la noted that the show’s creators, Mickey Down and Konrad Key, were also there to help, as the show was inspired by their own experiences working in finance.

“We always had an expert available to guide us through, particularly, some of those really big trade scenes where we just have to know what’s going on,” she explained.
“I’m not, I’m like not gonna go home and like invest my own money or whatever,” Myha’la said with a laugh. “It’s like, all I really [need] to know is like, am I winning in this scenario? Am Iosing? Is this good? Is this bad?”
She continued, “I don’t need much more than that to do my job, which is just to make you believe that I know what I’m talking about.”
Ken Leung, who plays Eric Tao in Industry, chimed in to agree with his costar.
“You just have to know the stakes in order to play the scene,” he said. “Mickey and Conrad make themselves very available to us at all times. So anytime we have any kind of question, they answer it.”
“Speaking for myself, once the scene is done, I’ve forgotten everything,” Leung joked.

Industry depicts a group of young bankers and traders who work at Pierpoint & Co., a prestigious investment bank in London. The series follows these young professionals as they navigate the pressure of working in finance after the 2008 collapse.
The show, which premiered in 2020, is in the midst of its fourth season. According to the official logline, season 4 will see the group “at the top of their game and living the lives they set out to have as Pierpoint grads.” However, drama boils when Harper and Yasmin, played by Marisa Abela, “are drawn into a high-stakes, globetrotting cat-and-mouse game when a splashy fintech darling bursts onto the London scene.”
As Yasmin and Harper navigate their romantic relationships, “their twisted friendship begins to warp and ignite under the pressure of money, power, and the desire to be on top.”
The eight-episode season stars Myha’la, Abela, Leung and Kit Harington, with Max Minghella, Kiernan Shipka, Kal Penn, Claire Forlani and Charlie Heaton joining the cast.
Fans can stream new episodes of Industry on HBO Max, with new episodes releasing every Sunday until March 1.
