Mamma mia!
Everyone’s favorite Brooklyn plumber is back in “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” (in theaters April 1), a big-screen follow-up to 2023’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which netted nearly $1.4 billion at the global box office.
The Nintendo sequel is sure to be another galactic juggernaut, as the family friendly animated adventure brings characters such as Yoshi (Donald Glover) and Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie) into the fold alongside Mario (Chris Pratt), Bowser (Jack Black) and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy).
Before you take your kids to the multiplex this weekend, here’s everything you should know about the latest “Super Mario” film:
What is ‘Super Mario Galaxy’ about?

Princess Peach takes centerstage in the sequel, as she embarks on a quest to save her sister, Princess Rosalina (Brie Larson), who is kidnapped at the start of the film. Mario and Luigi (Charlie Day), meanwhile, are tasked with stopping the father-and-son Bowser duo, who have hatched a plan to team up and control the universe.
Glen Powell gets his Han Solo moment as the slick pilot Fox McCloud, and mischievous monkeys known as Ukikis threaten to steal the show with their pickpocketing antics.
What is ‘Super Mario Galaxy’ rated?

The film is rated PG for action, mild violence and rude humor. There are lasers, explosions, lava moats, and some creepy fantastical creatures, but it’s no more intense than the first movie.
How long is ‘Super Mario 2′?
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is 1 hour and 38 minutes – six minutes longer than its predecessor. If the kids need a bathroom break, make sure they’re back before the film’s midway point, when Princess Peach gets her backstory and Mario and Luigi are briefly transformed into babies. (Yes, it’s cute, and yes, there’s a dinosaur involved.)
Is the ‘Super Mario’ movie OK for little kids?

Like the first film, we’d recommend “Super Mario Galaxy” for children 7 and older. There is one scene of Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) and his mushroom people in distress as they flee a crumbling castle, and another where Bowser Jr. cries for his dad just as he is about to get eaten by giant purple dragon. (Fear not, he survives!) Late in the film, Bowser also takes on a spooky skeletal form called Dry Bowser, which may be a tad too scary for the youngest moviegoers.
A sassy, fan-favorite Luma returns to crack some dark jokes about death, and there’s a coterie of mafioso critters who intimidate Princess Peach at a casino. But in general, there’s nothing that your kids wouldn’t already see or hear from playing the video game.
When does the new ‘Mario’ movie come out?
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is in theaters April 1.
