Jack Black Gushes Over Donald Glover, Calls “Redbone” a ‘Song for the Ages’

Jack Black has taken some time to gush about his Super Mario Galaxy Movie co-star Donald Glover, especially as it pertains to his music.

While chatting with MTV UK, the actor showed some love to the five-time Grammy winner — who also goes by Childish Gambino — and comically recited the lyrics and instrumentation from his 2016 hit “Redbone.”

“Right before we came here to Japan, I really quickly crammed all of Donald Glover’s [music],” Black told the outlet. “‘Cause I was familiar with his music, I love his music, but I was like, you know what, I’ve never done the Chroma Marathon.”

“So I listened to all his jams and he’s such a genius in more ways than one,” Black said, before going on to call “Redbone” a song “for the ages,” comparing it to the 1971 Led Zeppelin classic “Stairway to Heaven.”

“It’s a masterpiece and I love his collabs,” Black continued, shouting out Glover’s longtime go-to producer, Ludwig Göransson. “Those two together are a really good combo.”

“Redbone” was co-written and produced by Gambino and Göransson and won the Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance in 2018.

Apparently Jack Black won’t have to wait too long for some new music from Glover, who recently discussed the possibility of putting out some new material — which would be his first since the release of his 2024 album, Bando Stone and the New World.

“I have plenty of songs that are, like, just for me. And I’m not saying like, oh, I’m like, putting them out. … I just love making it,” Glover told Entertainment Tonight at the Super Mario Galaxy premiere. “You know, I don’t know if I — I like telling stories. So, like, if I can make something that I’m like, ‘Oh, people should hear this.’ I definitely will put it out.”
